Korean War A major point of contention during the Cold War was the conflict ra in Korea. From 1950 to 1953 there was a fierce battle fought that two million civilians killed. North and South after World War II, Korea was divided into two areas. North Korea was occupied by the Soviet Union, while Korea was under the rule of the United States. However, the United States left the South Koreans little to their fate. North Korea rageerde, under the leadership of Kim Il-Sung, by invading South Korea on June 25, 1950. US takes action The United Nations subsequently chose to provide military ra aid to South Korea. In total, sixteen countries gave their support in the fight against North Korea. Douglas MacArthur was appointed commander in chief. The North Koreans, that 90% of South Korea had already conquered, were quickly reduced. The Communists ra had to give more ground, making China felt compelled to intervene. They were afraid that the battle was expanding to China. Seoul was quickly recaptured by the North Koreans, with the support of the Soviets and the Chinese. ra MacArthur wanted to proceed to an attack on China by using an atomic bomb. President Truman strongly advised against ra this, because of the danger of a nuclear war. MacArthur was removed from his post shortly ra afterwards. Erratic Fighting meanwhile continued unabated. There were on both sides many ups and downs, so it was unclear in whose favor the war would be decided. Several peace negotiations were held, but this eventually led to nothing. Only after the death of Soviet leader Josef Stalin in 1953 was actually shot in the peace negotiations. On July 27, 1953 a cease-fire was announced. Two million civilians lost their lives in the Korean War. Peace was never officially signed between North and South Korea. There are various overtures made by both sides, but the relationship was never really hot. Netherlands Dutch support has also contributed to the Korean War. Six naval vessels were sent in total and had almost 4,000 soldiers in Korea. Netherlands initially was not keen on participating in the war. They were afraid of a world conflict and also pressed the defense spending heavily on the Dutch budget who was recovering from World War II.
