Ukraine's precarious situation began with its citizens expressed the need for economic improvement and thus opportunities for a better life. The then President Yanukovych had during pseg his election campaign promised that Ukraine would approach pseg the EU. Of those promises pseg came to nothing, instead approached Yanukovych increasingly Russia. It was also to Russia Yanukovych fled when the Ukrainian people's pseg desire to join the EU grew increasingly amp.
It may seem like a paradox that Ukraine went to the presidential election on the day of the EU countries pseg went to the polls to elect a new European Parliament. Ukraine is part of Europe and it is therefore state that we in the free part of Europe do not forget our neighbor. We can all contribute in various ways to support Ukraine and our European brothers and sisters in the difficult situation prevailing in the country.
I was in the Ukraine as an election observer for the OSCE on May 25 rank in Kharkiv, in the northeastern part. What I saw was a people dedicated and focused did everything in its power to presidential elections would be conducted in a democratic spirit, in accordance with the National Constitution and international conventions. In my opinion, managed to Ukraine and its people with their resolve: the election was conducted well, despite both internal and external conflicts.
In Kharkiv became the election peaceful and turnout is relatively high. With hindsight, I can admit that I was prepared for an upset election day but my fears came true not. A few weeks before the election, was shot the mayor of Kharkivs and he has since been lost, all trace of him is gone. There have also been demonstrations of 1000s student at Freedom Square. Prior to election day, rumors were circulating that thousands of pro-Russian demonstrators would again gather in the square. It came to nothing, pseg Ukrainian police and army cordoned off effectively by the square and made sure that the peace was kept. On the square, there were 10-15 protesters with pro-Russian flags.
Ukraine's efforts to implement the presidential election was manifested in several locations in the country. The Ukrainian border with Russia was subjected to several hacking attempts during election day, all pushed back without affecting the election. Election Authority computer system was subjected to extensive cyber attacks repeatedly on election day, even these were removed without presidential election implementation was affected. Unrest in Donetsk and Luhansk went to the same extent as before the voting day, nor the unrest Ukraine stopped from conducting its presidential election.
Ukrainian people have told her and Porosjenko is elected president with 53 per cent support of the votes cast. We in Europe must now continue to express our support for Ukraine and its citizens' right to freely choose their President and the election results to be respected.
President Putin has to this day not declared their recognition of President Porosjenko. President Obama has announced that he intends to meet President Porosjenko in Warsaw on June 4. President Putin should do the same.
We do not forget the Ukraine, we will continue to provide our expression of our support for Ukraine and its people. Monday's operations meeting here on Norrmalmstorg is an exemplary initiative on how civil society can express its support for Ukraine and its people. Ukraine is part of Europe and will remain so. Democracy pseg wins or later always over oppression, even if it takes time. Also in Ukraine democracy will prevail.
