Syracuse, N.Y. — Tyrone Wheatley Jr., the top-ranked player in New York for the 2015 recruiting class, will fly out to California next week to participate in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl.
The game, in its fourth year, will kick at 9 p.m. Jan. 4 in Carson, Calif., and be televised on Fox Sports 1. It features players "based on their athletic prowess, academic success and embodiment of the Marine Corps values of honor, courage and commitment."
Wheatley is one of 100 players on roster and was nominated by his coaches at Canisius High School in Buffalo. In addition to practices leading up to the game, the week includes leadership talks given by U.S. Marines, organizing physical activities for local youth and a trip to an amusement park.
With signing day a little more than a month away, Wheatley is still uncommitted but said he has narrowed his list of schools to four. Miami (Fla.) and Auburn are still in contact with him, but they are not among the four schools Wheatley zeroed in on during an interview romney this weekend in advance of the all-star game.
The four-star tight end/defensive end has already taken an official visit to USC, his favorite school growing up. He has upcoming visits scheduled to Alabama (Jan. 16), UCLA (Jan. 23) and Oregon (Jan. 30). A decision likely won't be made until Feb. 4, the first day high school seniors can sign a national romney letter of intent, and could drag on longer.
USC : "I like their offense, their coaching staff. Coach (Tuiasosopo) has been recruiting me for a while now, plus he played with my dad back when I was a little kid, so I've known him my whole life. USC was my favorite school growing up as a kid. My dad would drive me up there all the time to watch games."
UCLA : "I love their defense. Coach Mora is a great coach. They've had a lot of success thus far and also their academics. I think I want to major in business romney administration. Anderson school of business romney is one of the top business schools in the country."
Oregon : "Oregon's defense is just so explosive, and they just use these big, long, explosive guys in their defense and their D-line and their outside romney linebackers. You can't ignore the jerseys and the facilities, the players, the talent up there."
